Grow a Reader Outreach: For Educators, Parents, & Caregivers
Grow a Reader Outreach is designed to serve preschoolers and the adults who care for and teach them. This program currently visits 18 preschools, 26 childcare facilities, and the Head Start programs in Fredericksburg, Stafford County, and Spotsylvania County.
For each facility, we book two storytimes per year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Our goals are to encourage children, teachers, and parents to use the library, model read-aloud techniques for teachers and caregivers, and overall, have fun!
Program participants also receive a box of children's books and a theme bag delivered to them every two weeks. These are browsing collections of books for the teachers to read to the children and for the children to use themselves. Every bag includes a puppet, books, a DVD, a CD, fingerplay instructions, and teacher resources centered on one theme, such as Outer Space, Families, Fish, Foxes, Dragons, Colors, Shapes, and Growing Things.
The Grow a Reader Outreach program also offers literacy-based workshops worth two hours of credit twice yearly. These free workshops are held at the library and are open to any adults who work with preschool children.

Youth Services Outreach
The Youth Services Programming Vehicle will bring essential library services into the community, including STEM learning; computer, printing, and WiFi access; information on programs and events at the library branch; and a small browsing collection of youth services materials.
We work with local school divisions and community organizations to identify neighborhoods which can benefit the most. This service has regularly scheduled stops offering literacy and STEM-focused programs for after-school homework clubs at these locations:
- Stafford Junction
- Heritage Park Apartments
- Hazel Hill Apartments
The Youth Services Programming Vehicle is made possible through the generous support of the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund of the Community Foundation and a gift from Midge Vittoria.
